I've also previously written for the Picturehouse Cinemas blog, UK Film Review and InSession Film.
My love for the art of film criticism began when I started listening to BBC Radio 5 Live's Kermode and Mayo's Film Review podcast some time around 2007. Mark Kermode's love and knowledge of film inspired me to explore different film genres and the history of the pictures. Having left a degree course in Acting in 2010, I interviewed for a place at the University of Warwick to study Film and Literature and started my degree in 2014.
I graduated with a First Class degree in Film and Literature in 2017. I'd already started writing film reviews while at university and had the honour of interviewing Mark Kermode for the University of Warwick's student newspaper The Boar. The key to getting my first paid piece was - as is so often the case - a mixture of making the right connections and determination.
I contacted Simon Brew, the then-editor of Den of Geek (and now founder and editor of Film Stories). I told him I'd seen him at Kermode's show - the same show where I'd interviewed Kermode for my piece - and pitched some ideas to him in a lengthy email. We had a phone chat, discussed the joy of correctly using semicolons and agreed on my first piece.
One of my proudest writing moments so far is having my Den of Geek article 'A Beginners Guide to Wittertainment' discussed on Kermode and Mayo's Film Review. It's a pleasure to have the opportunity to write about film and television and I really hope you enjoy reading my articles.
It's important to know the journalist you're reading. If we have a similar film sensibility, then you're likely to trust my reviews and enjoy my features. So why not have a look at...
